The Abbeyfield Society is a national not-for- profit charitable foundation, solely dedicated to the welfare and happiness of the elderly people in each locality. For over 50 years, it has provided secure, supported retirement accommodation for elderly people - many of them in their nineties - who are reasonably fit but who do not wish or are unable to go on living alone. They want to remain independent and value their privacy but wish to shed the burdens of cooking and housekeeping. They want to feel secure and, above all, they want companionship - loneliness in old age is the greatest burden of all.

Abbeyfield is a unique partnership of residents, salaried staff and a team of volunteers, who provide the management and that precious extra: companionship.

From a single house in Bermondsey, the Abbeyfield movement has grown into a national -indeed international - organisation with around 750 houses in the UK alone, looking after about 8000 residents.

Many Abbeyfield houses are managed by autonomous Societies with their own rules, trustees and management committees. Others are under group management. All respect the principles and standards of the Abbeyfield movement as a whole.
